About the Sangha Community

Sangha Community

The definition of ‘Sangha’:

(Pali: saṅgha; Sanskrit: saṃgha) is a Pali or Sanskrit word that can be roughly translated as "association" or "assembly"; a company or community with a common goal, vision or purpose. It is commonly used in several senses to refer to Buddhist or Jain groups. Traditionally in Buddhism, Sangha almost always has one of two meanings: most commonly Sangha means the monastic Sangha of ordained Buddhist monks or nuns.

When we talk about a Sangha, we refer to the initiated students in the UK – this is not an ordained Sangha! The Sangha is responsible, in general, for maintaining, translating, advancing, and spreading the teachings of the Dharma.

Sangha Community

For our community here at Wisdom 36, we have created an environment in which all students enjoy total support on their journey of growth and discovery, initiates or not. To this end we have created a membership scheme whereby each member donates a regular amount.

In return, the Sangha Community provides the opportunity for members to attend classes and groups that enhance their practice and learning. Each member of the Sangha Community shares responsibilities in the upkeep and general running of any building regularly used for practice and workshops.

It falls to our Sangha Community to continue to share the Dharma with individuals who seek knowledge and comfort in some of the foundation practices.

Joining the Sangha Community

Do you resonate with what you’ve read here? If so, we invite join in and support the activities of the Sangha Community; we have a voluntary membership scheme, which entitles the student to participate in all first level classes, practices, and social events free of charge. We hold regular practice sessions and a fortnightly open day, with practice, discussions and a shared lunch!

We are currently asking a contribution of £30 per month. This contribution will be put towards the shrine itself and other running costs for maintaining and promoting the teachings.

If you are interested in taking part, please contact us for further information!
